 Just like in life, football has its twists and turns. In '98, I received a gift that I never imagined would change my life: "PC Fútbol." This game sparked my love for tactics and strategy. It had a comprehensive database that included scouts, who helped find promising players to sign. I spent hours searching for players to strengthen my team. I remember signing Shevchenko for Gimnasia y Tiro de Salta from a Ukrainian team. Unknowingly, I was beginning my journey into scouting through play. Without a doubt, this game left a mark on many people, including Víctor Orta, the current sporting director of Sevilla.

Years later, "Football Manager" emerged, a game I frequently consult and which is now the most realistic football simulator. It features an extensive database with leagues and divisions worldwide, countless players, coaches, scouts, staff, and even agents. Increasingly, clubs are using this simulator to observe players and detect future stars. One of the most significant cases was Roberto Firmino, who played for Figueirense in Brazil's second division when a Hoffenheim scout was impressed by his attributes in the game. Following proper scouting, he was signed.

There are several similar situations. The most notable and perhaps "viral" in recent times was Ben Brereton Díaz, a player born in England, who was called up by the Chilean national team. Interestingly, Chile realized they could call him up thanks to a Chilean streamer who discovered his dual nationality in the game, sparking a campaign for Ben to represent Chile. Later, he received the official call-up from the federation.

Another case is Will Still, who currently manages Racing Club de Lens in France's Ligue 1. He has often acknowledged that his passion for coaching began with the game. In his words, he attests to the game's importance in his life as a coach: "I never thought the game could influence my real-life career, but it clearly has. I became obsessed with Football Manager, and it ignited my passion for coaching."

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney also declared that he used the popular simulator to scout players when he was managing DC United in the United States. He even mentioned that the club had alliances with several talent scouts involved in producing and evaluating ratings within the game.

For those of us who have followed and played this game for years, the story of Nathan Owolabi was impactful. At 23, he participated in a contest organized by the game and XBOX, offering the chance to join Bromley Football Club as a tactical performance assistant, and he won. His contributions were fundamental, helping the team ascend from the National League, a semi-professional league, to EFL League Two, a professional fourth division in England. The young gamer demonstrated that video games could be a platform for developing real-life applicable skills.

These games marked my first steps without knowing what destiny had in store. In 2016, I had the opportunity to accompany Gaby Ruiz to a Bundesliga match, who was then a scout for Middlesbrough. Later, I discovered he was one of the creators of that life-changing gift, PC Fútbol.

For that 10-year-old boy, these games were just a pastime spent hours in front of the computer. Today, they represent a valuable tool in his work. These stories show us that often, even without all the proper tools, we can find a way.

Scouting, de la fantasía a la realidad

 Así como la vida misma, el fútbol también tiene sus vueltas. En el año 98' me hicieron un regalo el cual nunca pensé al día de hoy que me cambiaría la vida. Con el "PC Fútbol" llegó mi amor por la táctica y la estrategia. Un juego muy completo con una gran base de datos donde aparecía el papel de los ojeadores, quienes te ayudaban a encontrar promesas para fichar. Pasaba horas buscando jugadores para reforzar mi plantilla. Recuerdo haber fichado con Gimnasia y Tiro de Salta a Shevchenko, proveniente de un equipo Ucraniano. De esta manera, sin saberlo, jugando, comenzaba a incursionar en el scouting. Sin dudas, fue un juego que marcó a muchas personas y que logró captar la atención de muchos futboleros, como lo es Víctor Orta,  actual director deportivo del Sevilla.  

Años después surgió el "Football Manager", juego al que consulto bastante y que en la actualidad es el más real en lo que al fútbol se refiere. Cuenta con una enorme base de datos con ligas y divisiones de todo el mundo, un sinnúmero de jugadores, entrenadores, scouts, empleados y hasta representantes. Son cada vez más los clubes que se fijan en éste simulador para observar jugadores y detectar futuras promesas. Uno de los casos más significativos fue el de Roberto Firmino, quien jugaba en el Figueirense de la segunda división brasileña, cuando un ojeador del Hoffenheim se sorprendió por los atributos con los que contaba en el videojuego. Acto seguido, le hicieron el seguimiento correspondiente para luego ficharlo. 

Y así, existen varias situaciones de similares características: 

Los más resonantes y quizá "virales" en éste último tiempo fueron el de Ben Brereton Díaz, jugador nacido en Inglaterra, convocado por la selección chilena. Lo llamativo fue que Chile se percata que dicho jugador podía ser convocado gracias a un streamer chileno que detectó en el juego la doble nacionalidad del jugador, y fue así que inició una campaña para que Ben fuera convocado para representar a su país. Tiempo más tarde, recibió la notificación por parte de la federación de su convocatoria a la selección absoluta. El otro caso es el de Will Still, entrenador que dirige actualmente al Racing Club de Lens de la Ligue 1 francesa. El mismo reconoció en varias oportunidades que su pasión por entrenar nació con el juego. En sus palabras, atestigua la importancia del mismo en su vida como entrenador... “nunca hubiera pensado que el juego podría influir en mi carrera en la vida real, pero está claro que lo ha hecho. Me obsesioné con Football Manager y encendió mi pasión por entrenar".

También, una leyenda del Manchester United, Wayne Rooney declaró que utilizaba el popular simulador para ojear jugadores cuando se encontraba como entrenador del DC United estadounidense. Es más, mencionó que el club tenía alianzas con varios cazatalentos encargados de la producción y evaluación de notas dentro del juego.

En el año 2016 tuve la oportunidad de acompañar en un partido por la Bundesliga a Gaby Ruiz, quien en ese entonces se desempeñaba como scout en el Middlesbrough inglés. Tiempo después me enteré que había sido uno de los creadores de aquel regalo que me marcó, el PC Fútbol. 

Así como para aquel niño de 10 años aquellos juegos eran simplemente un pasatiempo en el que pasaba horas frente a la computadora, hoy representan una herramienta más de su trabajo. 

Estas cosas nos demuestran que muchas veces, a pesar de no contar con todas las herramientas adecuadas, siempre se puede encontrarle la vuelta.
